The EC is the regulatory body of the EU. It has the power to initiate EU Regulations and is the guardian of the EU Treaty. It is run conjointly by 27 Commissioners from each Member State, who is assigned a policy portfolio or ‘Directorate General’. The EC administration is composed of around 30 000 civil servants who draft, manage and evaluate EU regulations and projects.
The EIB is the European Union's bank. It is owned by and represents the interests of the EU Member States. The EIB is the largest multilateral lending institution in the world, and a leading sovereign-class international borrower. It raises substantial volumes of funds on the capital markets, which it lends on favourable terms to projects furthering European objectives.
There are more than 30 agencies in different EU countries. They have an important role in implementing EU policies, especially tasks of a technical, scientific, operational and/or regulatory nature.
